Using the Vacuum

My vacuum pushes or sucks up area rugs.
  1. Turn the Suction Release collar on the handle to MIN to reduce suction. Does the vacuum still lift area rugs? If so, proceed to the next step. If not, continue vacuuming as usual.
  2. Move the power switch to Setting I, Hard Floor. The brushroll will spin at a lower speed.

Filters

How often should I clean the filters?
Clean filters regularly for optimal performance. Normal usage is between 4 to 6 hours a week.

Pre-motor foam and felt filters: Under normal usage, rinse clean every 3 months.

Post-motor HEPA filter: Under normal usage, rinse clean every year or as needed.

Rinse filters with water ONLY. Let all filters air-dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinstalling.

  2. Remove the dust cup and pull the foam and felt filters out from the motor housing.
  3. Rinse filters thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. DO NOT place filters in the dishwasher or washing machine.
  4. Squeeze out excess water and let filters air-dry completely for at least 24 hours before replacing.
  5. When filters are completely dry, reinstall the felt filter first, then add the foam filter on top.

How do I know when the filters need to be cleaned?
Filters may need to be cleaned if the vacuum is not picking up dirt, if airflow is restricted, or if you notice lighter or no suction.

Pre-motor (Foam & Felt) Filters:
  • The pre-motor foam and felt filters underneath the dust cup should be cleaned once every 3 months.
  • The pre-motor foam and felt filters should be rinsed with water and left to air-dry completely.
  • Recommended air-drying time is 24 hours, but overnight should be fine.


Post-motor (HEPA) Filters:
  • The HEPA filter on the front of the unit should be cleaned once a year. The HEPA filter cartridge should be rinsed with lukewarm water with the dirty side down until the water runs clear
  • Allow the filter to air-dry completely for 24 hours.
  • Once the HEPA filter is dry, reinstall it, and then replace the cover by lining up the tabs on one side and swinging the door securely closed until it clicks into place.

Dust Cup

How do I remove the dust cup?
Press the release button on the top of the dust cup handle. Tilt the dust cup and lift it away from the vacuum body. Note: The dust cup should be emptied each time you vacuum and periodically during cleaning, when it appears full. To reinsert the dust cup, install the bottom into the pod first, then press in the top until it clicks into place.

How do I empty the dust cup?
  1. Hold the dust cup over the trash and press the bottom door release button on the front of the dust cup. The bottom lid will drop open.
  2. Tap gently to empty contents.
  3. Close the lid, pressing it until it clicks into place.
  4. If needed, turn the dust cup upside down over the trash and press the top door release button.
  5. Tap gently to remove contents and wipe clean with a soft cloth.

Using the Product

Are there different settings for carpets and hard floors?
The Shark Navigator® Zero-M® Pet Pro Upright Vacuum has 2 settings for cleaning.

For bare floors and smaller area rugs: Press the power button on the vacuum pod to turn on suction and select setting I, Hard Floor. To activate the brushroll, gently step on the cleaner heard and tilt the handle back. Note that the brushroll will spin slowly in Hard Floor mode.

For carpets and area rugs: Press the power button on the vacuum to turn on the suction and select setting II, Carpet. While the power is on, gently step on the cleaner head and tilt the handle back to activate the brushroll. The brushroll will spin faster in Carpet mode.

How do I remove the handle and the wand to clean above the floor?
  1. Remove the cord from the cord clip.
  2. Press the Release button located opposite the power button on the top of the pod.
  3. Gently pull up on the handle to remove the wand from the pod.
  4. Add an accessory to the end of the wand and begin cleaning.
  5. To replace, insert the wand into the pod and press down until it clicks into place.

How do I open the cover on the bottom of the cleaner head to access the brushroll?
  1. Make sure the vacuum is unplugged.
  2. Place the vacuum flat on the floor with the bottom of the cleaner head facing up.
  3. Locate the 3 locks on the bottom of the cleaner head. With a coin, turn the locks clockwise to open, then lift up the cover.
  4. With scissors, carefully cut away any hair or fibers wrapped around the brushroll.
  5. Remove any debris inside the cleaner head.
  6. Close the cover completely, pressing firmly on all sides, and use the coin to turn the 3 locks counterclockwise.

How do I adjust the suction on my vacuum?
The Suction Control slider located on the top of the handle allows you to adjust the suction. You can choose the optimal suction level for both bare floors and carpets.

How do I clear clogs from my vacuum?
  1. Turn off and unplug your vacuum.
  2. Press the handle release button to remove the handle.
  3. Press the wand release button to remove the wand.
  4. Press the hose release tabs where the hose connects to the body of the vacuum to remove the hose.
  5. Remove the dust cup.
  6. Remove the cover from the bottom of the cleaner head.
  7. Check all openings for clogs, using a flashlight to help find obstructions.
  8. Make sure to reassemble the vacuum properly before turning it back on.

General Information

How do I check for blockages?
The Zero-M® self-cleaning brushroll delivers nonstop hair removal. Zero-M removes long hair, short hair, and pet hair from the brushroll while you vacuum. If any hair remains wrapped around the brushroll, continue cleaning to allow Zero-M technology to remove it for you. If hair wrap persists, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum.
  2. Press the release button near the top of the dust cup to open the top lid. Reach inside to ensure that no dust or pet hair is blocking the airflow through the plastic cone-shaped debris screen in the center of the dust cup.
  3. Detach hose from back of pod and check for blockages at connection point and end of hose. Remove blockages, if any.
  4. Detach the handle from the wand. Now turn on the unit to check suction at the end of the handle. Remove any blockages.
  5. Remove the wand from the unit, and clear any blockages.
  6. Place the vacuum flat on the floor with the bottom of the cleaner head facing up. Locate the 3 locks on the bottom of the cleaner head. With the edge of a coin, turn the 3 locks counterclockwise to open, then lift open the cover. Make sure to not bend the metal cord guards. Check openings for blockages.
  7. Clean any hair, dirt, or debris off the brushroll. Replace the cover. Press down on all sides of the cover until it clicks securely into place. Secure the cover by turning the 3 locks clockwise.
  8. Reassemble the vacuum, making sure each piece clicks securely into place.

Using the Vacuum

What should I do if there is no suction or low suction?
  1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum.
  2. Remove the dust cup. Holding it over a trash receptacle, press the release button near the bottom of the dust cup. The bottom of the dust cup will open to let dust and debris fall into the trash. Close the dust cup lid.
  3. Press the release button near the top of the dust cup to open the top lid. Reach inside to ensure that no dust or pet hair is blocking the airflow through the plastic cone-shaped debris screen in the center of the dust cup.
  4. With the dust cup removed, take out the foam and felt pre-motor filters to set aside.
  5. Plug in the unit and place your hand over the filter area above the motor inlet. You should only feel airflow when the unit is powered on. If you feel airflow, go to Step 6. If you don't feel airflow with the unit powered on, see "What do I do if my vacuum has no power/intermittent power?".
  6. Reinstall the filters and dust cup.
  7. Detach hose from back of pod and check for blockages at connection point and in hose. Remove blockages, if any.
  8. Detach handle from wand. Turn the unit on to check the suction at the end of the handle. Remove any blockages. If no blockages are found, continue to Step 9.
  9. Detach the wand, and remove any blockages.
  10. Place the vacuum flat on the floor with the bottom of the cleaner head facing up. Locate the 3 locks on the bottom of the cleaner head. With the edge of a coin, turn the 3 locks counterclockwise to open, then lift open the cover. Make sure to not bend the metal cord guards. Check openings for blockages.
  11. Remove any hair, dirt, or debris from the brushroll. Replace the cover. Press down on all sides of the cover until it clicks securely into place. Secure the cover by turning the 3 locks clockwise.

What if my vacuum is making a loud or unusual noise?
Was the noise present when the vacuum was new? The Zero-M® cleaner head actively removes hair wrap from the brushroll. The cleaner head will generate some noise due to its self-cleaning.

If the noise was not present when the vacuum was purchased, see "What should I do if there is no suction or low suction?"

What should I do if the front wheels of the vacuum are squeaking?
  1. Place the vacuum flat on the floor with the bottom of the cleaner head facing up.
  2. Inspect the small front wheels on the bottom of the cleaner head. Manually rotate the wheels and remove any debris or hair from the wheel, while rotating.

What do I do if my vacuum has no power/intermittent power?
  1. Check to see if the brushroll has stopped spinning. If so, see "What should I do if the brushroll stops spinning or spins intermittently?" If the brushroll continues to spin, proceed to the next step.
  2. Turn off and unplug the vacuum.
  3. Empty the dust cup and remove the filters. Set filters aside.
  4. Remove handle from the wand and remove the hose from the back of the unit. Check for blockages (see "How do I check for blockages?").
  5. Remove any blockages, then reassemble the vacuum, making sure each piece clicks securely into place.
  6. Plug in the vacuum and turn it on. Step on the cleaner head and tilt back the handle to engage the brushroll. If the brushroll spins, resume cleaning as usual. If not, proceed to the next step.
  7. The vacuum's motor thermostat may have overheated and needs time to cool. Allow the unit to cool for a minimum of 45 minutes, then try vacuuming again.
  8. If the vacuum does not turn on properly after 45 minutes, plug it into a verified working outlet in a different room.
  9. If the vacuum turns on and runs normally, continue cleaning as usual.

What should I do if my vacuum overheats?
The vacuum cleaner is equipped with a motor protective thermostat. If for some reason your vacuum overheats, the thermostat will automatically turn the unit off. Should this occur, perform the following steps to restart the motor thermostat:

  1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum.
  2. Check for clogs or dirty filters. Clear any clogs (see "How do I check for blockages?") and wash filters as necessary (see "How do I know when the filters need to be cleaned?").
  3. After the unit has cooled for up to 45 minutes, plug it back in and turn on the power.

If any hair remains wrapped around the brushroll, continue cleaning to allow Zero-M technology to remove it for you. If hair wrap persists, follow these steps:
  1. If available, vacuum a low-pile carpet using setting II, Carpet mode. If a low-pile carpet is not available, place the vacuum on a hard floor (hardwood or tile) and select Setting I, Hard-Floor mode. Ensure the cleaning area does not contain noticeable hair or debris.
  2. Run the vacuum for 30 seconds, moving it back and forth. (Note: Leaving the vacuum stationary while running may lead to potential floor damage.) Shut off and unplug the vacuum. Inspect the cleaner head for hair on the brushroll.
  3. If hair remains on the brushroll, repeat Step 2 up to five more times (a total of 3 minutes) until hair is cleared.
  4. If hair is not removed after six tries, ensure the vacuum is shut off and unplugged, then check for blockages (see "What should I do if there is no suction or low suction?").

What should I do if the brushroll stops spinning or spins intermittently?
  1. Ensure the unit is plugged in and turned on.
  2. Select Setting II (Carpet).
  3. Place your foot on the cleaner head and tilt the handle back to engage the brushroll.
  4. Verify the color of the brushroll Indicator Light.
  5. If the light is green and the brushroll is spinning, continue cleaning as usual. If the light is red, see "What should I do if the brushroll light is red and the brushroll will not spin?" If the brushroll indicator light is off, see "What should I do if the brushroll light is off and the brushroll will not spin?" If the brushroll indicator light is flashing red, see "What should I do if my vacuum overheats?"

What should I do if the brushroll light is off and the brushroll will not spin?
  1. Unplug the unit.
  2. Place the vacuum flat on the floor with the bottom of the cleaner head facing up. Use a coin to open the 3 locks and lift the cover. Check for any debris in the connection points and brushroll. Reattach the nozzle cover and lock it in place.
  3. Plug in the unit. Place your foot on the cleaner head and tilt the handle back to engage the brushroll. Turn on the unit.
  4. If the light is green and the brushroll is spinning, continue cleaning as usual. If the light is red, see "What should I do if the brushroll light is red and the brushroll will not spin?" If the brushroll indicator light is flashing red, see "What should I do if my vacuum overheats?"

What should I do if the brushroll light is red and the brushroll will not spin?
  1. Check to ensure the vacuum is set to the correct floor setting. The unit has a safety feature to prevent the brushroll motor from overheating on thick carpet.
  2. Turn off power to the unit. Slide the suction control collar to MIN to reduce suction. Turn on the vacuum, step on the footprint icon on the cleaner head, and tilt back the vacuum handle to engage the brushroll.
  3. Start the vacuum and run it back and forth over the floor. Does the brushroll indicator light stay green with the brushroll spinning? If not, see "What should I do if there is no suction or low suction?"
