General Information

How does this vacuum compare to its competitors?
The powerful vacuum will achieve over 98% of fine particle suction on bare-floor surfaces, whereas competitors have achieved 92% while also blowing dust and debris around due to a rotating vacuum brush or a high-powered exhaust. Our vacuum is engineered exclusively for hard floor cleaning to achieve the best fine particle suction up to the size of Cheerios.

Product Specifications

What specific types of surfaces can I clean with the Vac-Then-Steam®?
The Vac-Then-Steam® is engineered for premium performance exclusively on hard floor surfaces. It can be used on all sealed hard floor surfaces – including sealed hardwood, linoleum, ceramic tile, marble, and other stone floors. Note that we do not suggest use of this product on unsealed surfaces, such as unfinished hardwood, unglazed ceramic floors, or unsealed stone floors.

On surfaces that have been treated with wax or some no-wax floors, the sheen may be removed by the heat and steam action. We recommend testing an isolated area of the surface to be cleaned before proceeding. We recommend that you check the use and care instructions from the floor manufacturer.

What specific types of surfaces can I clean with the Vac-Then-Steam®?
The Vac-Then-Steam® is engineered for premium performance exclusively on hard-floor surfaces and is not intended for area rugs or carpets. It can be used on all sealed hard floors, including sealed hardwood, linoleum, ceramic tile, marble, and other stone floors. Note that we do not suggest using this product on unsealed surfaces, such as unfinished hardwood, unglazed ceramic floors, or unsealed stone floors.

Your Vac-Then-Steam® is designed to clean surfaces that will withstand high heat and moisture; this includes lacquer and polyurethane coatings.

  • Lacquer and polyurethane coatings provide a hard durable protective finish that withstands moisture.
  • The sheen may be removed by the heat, steam, and friction of the cleaning tools.
  • Do not use on unsealed wood surfaces, especially wood antique furniture, unglazed ceramic tile, painted surfaces or surfaces that have been treated with wax, oils, varnished, or shellac.
  • It is always recommended to test an isolated area of the surface before proceeding, and check the use and care instructions from the surface manufacturer.

Cleaning tip: When cleaning finished wood surfaces, use broad, continuous cleaning strokes. To prevent surface damage, avoid focusing steam or allowing the cleaning tools to sit in one spot for any amount of time.

What happens if I steam mop without vacuuming first?
It is not necessary to vacuum your floors before steam cleaning them. Mopping with a regular mop without vacuuming can result in snowplowing invisible dirt, catching non-water soluble particles in the fabric, and possibly catching your floor. The Shark® 2-in-1 Vac-Then-Steam® makes it easy to properly clean your hard floors with a powerful, fine particle vacuum that converts to a steam mop in seconds. You are able to achieve a truly clean floor that dries quickly.

Can I vacuum and steam at the same time?
We have specifically engineered this unit for optimal performance. The product is not able to vacuum and steam at the same time as a preventive measure to ensure product performance. This ensures premium bare-floor cleaning, in addition to prolonging the life of the unit. If you vacuum moisture, you can mix water with sand and create undesirable cementation inside the unit.

What sort of messes are best cleaned with each type of pad?
  • The all-purpose pad is a great all-surface, general scrubbing steam pad. It leaves a beautiful finish on hard-floor surfaces but is safe and effective to use on all sealed-floor surfaces. Use this in your kitchen or heavy foot-traffic areas.
  • The heavy duty shag pad is great on textured-floor surfaces, particularly ceramic tile. This pad is safe and effective all sealed hard floors and is ideal for cleaning multiple rooms and larger areas. You can clean up to 40 minutes without having to change your pad. For most homes, this means you can clean your entire first floor with just one pad.

Water Tank

Can cleaning solutions be added to the water?
Only water should be added to the Vac-Then-Steam®. No other substances should be added to the water. Additives will build up on the boiler, decreasing the life of the Vac-Then-Steam®. Most of the additive will be distilled out of the water. The remaining additive could end up in the steam vapor and, depending on the additive, could be dangerous to inhale while using the Vac-Then-Steam®. For these reasons, do not add anything but water to the Vac-Then-Steam®.

Something went wrong, please try again later
Is tap water safe to use?
Tap water is OK to use in the Vac-Then-Steam®. Distilled water is better for the longest boiler life. However, if you live in an area with hard water, we recommend using distilled water to prolong the life of your product.

Thank you for your feedback

Can I use filtered water instead of distilled water?
Distilled water is best. To be classified as distilled, the water is emptied of all minerals and undergoes a multi-step process. Filtered water is better than unfiltered for the boiler life.

Troubleshooting

This FAQ page is a great place to find info, tips and help. Just make sure you’ve read your Owner’s Guide before using your unit.

General Information

I see that debris is stuck on the inside of the cone insert, which is inside the dust cup. How can I access it to clean it out?
You can clean the cone insert inside the dust cup. Remove the dust cup and the dust cup filters from the top. You should be able to see inside the cone once the top of the dust cup and the filters are removed. Rinse out any residual debris that may be stuck inside the cone area. Dry the dust cup, replace the filters inside the top frame, and attach the top of the dust cup. Reattach the assembled, clean and dry dust cup.

Dirt and debris fall out of the bottom of the product after I remove the steam frame. What should I do?
Over time, some dirt may build up at the entrance to vacuum path on the bottom of the unit. Often you can just let it dry, tap the dry debris out of the vacuum, and use the vacuum to suck up the particles. It should go up the air path to the dust cup if the insides of the vacuum are dry. Alternatively, you can use a sponge to clean the vacuum entrance. There are no moving or electrical parts in this area.

My floors are cloudy, streaky, or spotty after steaming. What’s wrong?
1. First check to see if the microfiber pad is dirty. If so, flip it over or remove and replace with a clean one.
2. If you are cleaning in a kitchen area, there could be a buildup of grease. Use a degreasing agent to clean the area first.
3. Review care instructions. Using powder detergents, fabric softeners, or dryer sheets can leave residue on the pads, which can transfer to the floor.
4. You may have left the Vac-Then-Steam® in the same spot with the microfiber pad attached for too long. Never leave the Vac-Then-Steam® in one spot with the pad attached for an extended period of time.
5. This might be left over from past cleaners used on the floor surface. Use the steam mop a few more times and see if the leftover cloudiness is removed.

1. In vacuum mode, brush off debris that may be visible in the wheels.
2. In steam mode, change the pad if it is too wet or dirty.
3. In either mode, adjust the height of the pole with the telescopic lever. Often, increasing the height of the pole will improve the push/pull feel.

Dust Cup

What do I do if I see steam moisture in the dust cup?
Remove the dust cup and allow the product to dry. Steam will not harm the product, but dirt and debris can get caught inside the suction path, preventing dirt from traveling all the way to the dust cup. To reduce this occurrence, wait at least 2 minutes after steam mopping before vacuuming another area of your home.
